Guilford Scores 10 in Win at West Haven

Happy Mother's Day to all the baseball moms out there!

For the 2nd consecutive game it was Freshman, Cade Rinehart, who shined on the mound for the Grizzlies as they cruised to a 10-1 victory over the West Haven Blue Devils, in a Saturday matinee game at WHHS's Whitey Piurek Field. Rinehart started the game and went 5.2 innings, allowing 0 earned runs on just 3 hits, before Tanner Smith and Alex Tafro combined for a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief to wrap up the win.

Despite WH taking an early 1-0 lead in the 1st, it was all Grizzlies' scoring the rest of the way. In the top of the 2nd, Guilford took a 2-1 lead on RBI ground outs by Adam Copeland and Matt DiNardo, and they increased their lead to 3-1 in the 3rd when Alex Tafro scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the 5th Guilford Captain, Bryce Meder, lead off with a "hustle" double (video) and after Mike Buccaro was hit by a pitch, Lucas Deshefy lined a RBI single to right that scored Meder for a 4-1, Grizzly lead and moved Buccaro to 3rd. (video) A few batters later, Copeland would earn his 2nd RBI when his sacrifice fly scored Buccaro to make it 5-1.

In the 6th, Guilford added 3 more runs on a Lucas Ametrano RBI double (video), a Buccaro RBI single (video) and a Deshefy sac fly, that increased their lead to 8-1 over the Blue Devils. In the 7th, with the bases loaded, Buccaro was hit by a pitch and Deshefy walked to push the Grizzlies' 9th & 10th runs across.

Rinehart finished up his day after getting the first 2 outs in the 6th, and earned the win, while Smith came on to get the last out in the 6th, and Alex Tafro tossed a 1-2-3 7th to finish up.

In the game, Deshefy had 3 RBI, while Buccaro and Copeland both had 2 RBI. Ametrano, Colin Pompano & Alex Tafro all had 2 hits apiece, including a 2B each for Ametrano & Pompano.

As Guilford enters the final week of regular-season play, their record stands at 12-5 on the year (9-4 SCC, 4-1 Division). On Mon., 5/13, the Grizzlies will make their final, reg. season road trip down to Fairfield Prep, for a 4 pm. game against the Jesuits at Fairfield University's Alumni Field. Then they will finish the season with home games vs. Cheshire (GHS Senior Day) on Wed., 5/15 and Notre Dame - WH on Fri., 5/17 - both games are a 4 pm. start.
