St. Joe's Outscores Guilford 10-7

The Guilford Varsity baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2024 season, falling to St. Joseph HS (Trumbull) in a 10-7 deafeat on Sat. afternoon. For the Grizzlies, Bryce Meder went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in the loss.

Meder's first double came in the top of the 1st and gave Guilford an early 2-0 lead, (video) but St. Joe's would cut that in half on Nick Coppola's RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.

In the bottom of the 2nd, the Cadets would score 5 times to take a 6-2 lead, that included RBI singles by Gavin Rovinelli & H.T. Jones.

The Grizzlies would fight back in the top of the 3rd, cutting the Cadet's lead to a single run. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Mike Buccaro and Meder made it 6-4, before Adam Copeland's RBI single sent the game into the bottom of the 3rd at 6-5, St. Joe's. (video)

In the bottom of the 4th, St. Joseph added 3 more runs to take a 9-5 lead, highlighted by Adam Chaves' 2-RBI double.

Guilford would score a run in the top of the 5th on a Cadet error, but St. Joe's answered back with a run in the bottom half to make it 10-6, heading into the 6th.

In the top of the 6th, Colin Pompano delivered a RBI single, but the Grizzlies could not muster any more runs, as St. Joseph wrapped up a 10-7 win. (video)

While Meder's 3-RBI, 3 hit day lead the Guilford's offense, both Pompano and Lucas Deshefy had 2 hits apiece in the loss. Freshman, Cade Rinehart, pitched 2-2/3 innings of relief, allowing just 1 run while striking out a pair in his Varsity debut.

Guilford's next game is scheduled for Wed., 4/10, vs. Xavier HS at GHS Field, then Milford's Jonathan Law HS visits Guilford on Fri., 4/12 - both games are scheduled for a 4 pm. start.
