Guilford Wins vs. NDWH at Quigley

Brandon Rosa pitched 5 strong innings, allowing just 2 hits and 0 earned runs, and Bryce Meder pitched the final 2 innings, striking out 5 Green Knights, as the Guilford Grizzlies defeated Notre Dame - West Haven 9-3, at Quigley Stadium on Monday. Mike Buccaro had a 2-run homer and Colin Pompano & Meder each had RBI doubles in the game.

After a scoreless 1st inning, Notre Dame put 2 on the board in the bottom of the 2nd, primarily due to a couple of Grizzly infield errors, but Guilford would answer back by taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3rd.

With runners on 1st and 2nd, Colin Pompano delivered a hard ground ball down the right-field line that scored Brandon Rosa from 2nd. (video) When a throw got away from a ND infielder on the play, Lucas Ametrano scored to tie the game at 2. Meder followed that up with a hard-struck double to left that scored Pompano and gave Guilford its 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 3rd. (video)

After getting a 1-run lead to work with, Rosa would hold the Green Knights scoreless through their next 3 turns at bat, ending his work on the mound with his team still holding a slim, 3-2 lead at the end of the 5. Meanwhile, Notre Dame starter Jesse Buonocore, battled Rosa, keeping his team in the game by pitching a scoreless 4th and 5th before the Grizzlies would strike again in the 6th.

In the top of the 6th, Guilford added to their lead when Lucas Deshefy lead off with a single and Mike Buccaro drove a 2-run homer high over the Quigley right-field wall, making it 5-2, Guilford, heading into the bottom of the 6th. (video)

In the bottom of the 6th, Meder came on to pitch in relief and would go on to strike out 5 Green Knights in his 2 innings of work, despite ND scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the 6th.

In the top of the 7th, Guilford would blow the game open when Matt DiNardo's bases-loaded single got past the ND left-fielder, scoring all 3 Grizzly baserunners that made it 9-3, which would be the final score of the game. (video)

The win has Guilford out to a 9-3 record on the year, with a 8-2 SCC record (3-0 in the Quinnipiac Division), after facing all of its 2024 SCC opponents at least once. Up next is a non-conference game vs. East Lyme, 4 pm. at GHS Field on Wed., 5/1. Then the Grizzlies will travel to Middletown's Palmer Field this coming Fri., 5/3, where they will take on Xavier in a night game - 7:00 pm first pitch.
