Grizzlies Get 10-7 Win Over Morgan

Lucas Ametrano went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and a HR in Guilford's 10-7 win over the Morgan Huskies on Wednesday afternoon at GHS Field. Sophomore, Tanner Smith, went 4 innings allowing just 3 hits & 1 run, earning the win in his first varsity start on the mound for the Grizzlies.

Guilford took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd when 4 consecutive Grizzlies walked to start the inning, before a run scored on a wild pitch, and a Joe Tafro sac-fly made it 3-0. A few batters later, Ametrano would drive in Guilford's 4th run on a RBI single.

Morgan scored their only run off Smith in the bottom of the 2nd on a Lucas Hoadley RBI single.

Guilford scored another run in the bottom of the 3rd on Matt Dinardo's safety squeeze bunt that scored Bryce Meder for a 5-1, Grizzly lead.

In the bottom of the 4th, Guilford scored 3 more runs and take an 8-1 lead. Ametrano would lead off the inning with a solo homer to center (video), then Mike Buccaro followed that up with a double off the right-field wall. (video) Lucas Deshefy singled Buccaro home to make it 7-1 (video), moved to 3rd on a fly-ball tag up, and then scored the Grizzlies' 8th run on a wild pitch.

Guilford would score a few more on a bases-loaded walk in the 5th, and Ametrano's 3rd RBI of the game which came in the 6th, when he singled Joe Tafro home for the Grizzlies' 10th run of the game.

Morgan scored 3 times in the top of the 5th, and then 3 more in the 6th to make the game seem closer than it was, and close enough for Meder to earn a save by pitching a 1-2-3, 7th that included a pair of strikeouts.

Besides Ametrano's 3-hit, 3-RBI game, Grizzly Captains Mike Buccaro went 2 for 5 with a double, and Bryce Meder had a double, a stolen base and the aforementioned save.

With a 5-2 record through their first 7 games, Guiford will next take on the Fairfield Prep Jesuits this Friday, 4/19, - 4 pm. start at GHS Field, before they must travel to Cheshire HS on Mon., 4/22, for a 4 pm. matchup with the Rams.
